The failed tubes were characterized by visual observation, chemical analysis of material, and microstructurally. The crude oil physical and chemical characteristics were also determined. It was confirmed that the material of failed crude heater tube was within the specification as per design. It was inferred from the obtained data that the heating furnace was operating efficiently for the feed oil from source 1. It was evident from the investigation that the failure of heater tubes became frequent when the crude oil feed was switched to source 2 from source 1. The careful in-depth study revealed that higher H2S content in the crude from source 2 (11-23ppm) caused severe corrosion damage of heater tubes in the radiation zone made of carbon steel designed originally based on source 1 crude oil.</span></p> ER -
